Stitching together our cross-cultural narratives through embroidery
Community engaged workshops hosted by Creative Community Hive with grant support from Burlington Arts and Culture Fund, September-October 2024
We are delighted to announce five exciting embroidery workshops to celebrate our cultural diversity in Burlington. Embroidery has an incredibly rich and varied history spanning thousands of years, and it is still widespread and popular today. In fact, of all our world’s ancient traditions, it is one of the longest surviving.
While each culture carries its own unique embroidery pattern, at our workshops we will discover some fascinating similarities, thanks to the traders in ancient times who carried not just spices but crafting techniques with them. Additionally, in a world of ever-decreasing attention spans and ever-increasing stress, embroidery forces us to slow down, taking the time to be present and in the moment!
Five workshops to be hosted during Ontario Culture Days, are designed to celebrate other cultures, share knowledge and learn about the origin and history behind few select traditional embroidery techniques. Our easy- to- follow format will offer a combination of lecture- demonstrations as well as hands-on instructions to try out some patterns. All the individual embroidered pieces generated at these workshops will be assembled as a single community engaged piece, symbolizing the diversity of cultural heritage
among the residents of Burlington.
No experience required, all material provided, open to all ages.
Spots are limited. To register please send us an email to: infohive2021@gmail.com or call: 905-484-1561.
